Part of the immune response is production of antibodies which end up blocking blood vessel linings and causing the blood vessels to becoming leaky. These leaky blood vessels lead to fluid build up in body cavities like the chest and abdomen. Unfortunately, we do not yet have a cure for this disease or even a good treatment plan to medically manage these cats. Both forms can lead to signs of systemic illness such as fever, lethargy and inappetance. FIP is almost always fatal. While supportive care (including fluids, steroids and feedings) may help him feel better temporarily, there is no cure or specific treatment for this disease. Unfortunately, there is no definitive diagnostic test so diagnosis is made with a combination of physical examination, bloodwork and laboratory findings. Unfortunately, the prognosis for cats affected by FIP is very poor. There is no surgery or treatment that can help cats with Feline Infectious Peritonitis. We would recommend humane euthanasia within the next one to two days. This can be done either at your local veterinarian or the OSU-Veterinary Medical Center.
