I usually turn my car in 2 to 3 months early to sign up for a deal. There were no penalty whatsoever because they wanted to keep me as their customer. They always cover rest of the payments and also waive the disposition fee as if the old lease is already over.
Turning it in a year in advance might be a bit too early. The dealer might try to rip you off. Here what I would do if I were you. Keep it for a few more months to save money. Even if you don't want the money, save and donate it! Email your dealer's online sales when you are really to turn it in. At the same time, email other dealers as if you are looking to for a new lease. You will get the best deal by negotiating via email. I never see them until they offer a good deal in email. Also try to get some quotes from sites like cardirect.com so you know the price range. If you don't do your homework, you might be paying $1000-$3000 for nothing. You don't want to pay more for less...
