Butterbean sunscreen

20SPF 全天然防晒。一共只有6种成分。

Ingredient: beeswax, shea butter, appricot  kernel oil, coconut oil, zinc oxide>100mn 22%, tocopherol(维他命E)

Coconut oil. Renowned for its nourishing effects on the skin. The antioxidant properties prevent burning, premature aging and oxidative damage. Coconut oil has anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-protozoa properties. It also has naturally occurring sun protection.

Zinc Oxide.A micronized powder from the earth. Zinc is used in sunscreens to provide a physical barrier between the suns rays and your skin. We use powdered zinc oxide and add it to the oils over a very low heat. The zinc oxide used at Butterbean is non-nano meaning the particles are large enough not to get into the blood stream (read more here).

Shea butter. Extracted from the nut of the Karate Tree or, “The Tree of Life". This Shea butter is raw and unrefined. It is produced in the traditional way in Uganda by village women. The women scoop the oil into gourds and the gourds are packed and shipped. Shea butter is high in unsaponifiables, antioxidants and cinneamic acid, a natural sunscreen. Shea Butter also contains Vitamins A, E and F. Vitamins A and E sooth the skin as well as provide collagen which has a recognized effect against skin aging. Vitamin F has essential fatty acids that restore damaged skin.

Beeswax. Seals in moisture on the skin and helps to make the sunscreen more water resistant. It imparts a sweet fragrance as well. Our beeswax is sourced locally from a beekeeper named Brian. He has been keeping bees since 1992.

Apricot Kernel Oil. A very mild and non-greasy oil. It is gentle for sensitive baby skin and great for any skin type. Apricot kernel oil is high in vitamins E, A and C. It is also rich in essential fatty acids like oleic and linoleic acid. The source company has a pure-as-can-be ingredient standard. Every essential oil must pass a battery of tests to ensure its authenticity, quality and purity. The extraction method does not include solvent, hexane, or alcohol extraction and the result is an oil that is as pure as it can be! - See more at: http://www.butterbeansunscreen.com/ingredients.html#sthash.iTvfYYwB.dpuf

Vitamin E. An antioxidant that scavenges for free radicals in tissues. It incorporates into the cell membrane and protects the cell from oxidative damage. Vitamin E is a strong moisturizer. Vitamin E works as a natural preservative to extend the shelf life of our products.  - See more at: http://www.butterbeansunscreen.com/ingredients.html#sthash.iTvfYYwB.dpuf

Mineral vs Chemical sunscreensButterbean sunscreen contains zinc oxide as the primary sun blocking ingredient. Zinc oxide is a mineral that works as a physical barrier where it sits on top of the skin and scatters and absorbs ultraviolet rays from the body. Zinc oxide is photo stable which means the sunscreen will not loose its effectiveness an hour after it is applied. It is not absorbed into the skin. Butterbean also contains organic ingredients. The Coconut and Shea butter oils are certified organic. The Apricot kernel oil is sourced from Aura Cacia, a company that has a well earth sustainability program. Zinc oxide does not carry an organic certification, however it is a natural mineral.

Chemical sunscreens absorb into the skin to impart protection. This is the reason that chemical sunscreens must be soaked in for 15 minutes before swimming. There are often multiple chemicals included in order to provide a full spectrum protection. One active ingredient in many chemical sunscreens is
oxybenzone. The US Center for Disease Control found that 97% of Americans have this chemical in their blood. This ingredient has been proven to disrupt normal hormone functions and should not be used on babies or children as it may disrupt their developing systems. Additional chemicals in sunscreens break down into free radicals or carcinogens. The chemicals do not just sit on top of the skin, but are absorbed and enter the body. The Environmental Working Group, a non-profit, recommends to avoid spray sunscreens entirely. The ingredients in chemical sunscreens are not meant to be inhaled and can be extremely hazardous.

About SPF:SPF stands for Sunburn Protection Factor. There are two categories of UV light: UVA and UVB.
UVA causes aging and UVB causes burns. SPF numbers are for UVB rays only. PPD, which stands for persistent pigment darkening, is the term used to measure UVA.  SPF helps to prevent sunburns and PPD guards against photoaging. It is important to have a broad spectrum sunscreen to protect against both types of UV rays.
Sunscreen with a UV protection above 30 can give a false sense of security since these numbers do not offer significantly more protection from the suns rays.

So here's how SPF numbers work. The idea is that if it takes, say, 10 minutes of sun exposure to cause a burn, an SPF15 will allow you to be in the sun for 10 minutes X 15 or 150 minutes without burning. This equation is non-linear. An SPF70 will not give protection for 700 minutes.

An SPF15 absorbs 93.3 percent of UVB rays. An SPF30 absorbs 96.7 percent. Even though the SPF number doubled, the absorption has increased only slightly. An SPF50 absorbs 98 percent. As you can see, once an SPF30 is reached protection does not increase dramatically. The FDA has stated that any sunscreens labeled higher than SPF30+ are misbranded.

Butterbean sunscreen has an approximate SPF of 20. This is based on the percentage of zinc oxide used (20%) and takes into account the way that non-nano zinc oxide behaves in a matrix. Coconut oil and Shea butter have a naturally occurring SPF delivering extra protection. Sunscreen should be re-applied at least every 2 hours and after swimming. Other measures should be taken to limit sun exposure such as:
  • wear protective clothing such as rash guards and hats
  • stay in the shade as much as possible
  • avoid the hours between 10am and 4pm when the suns most intense UV rays are shinning
  • avoid reflective surfaces such as water, sand or pavement
