Airline Ticket Credit Fraud

How the scam works: Crooks use stolen credit cards to purchase airline tickets and then cancel them, in order to get a flight credit and a confirmation number. A series of airlines in the United States make it pretty easy to pull this, especially Southwest Airlines. After canceling, scam artists offer the funds online, on websites like Craigslist, Kijiji, Oodle or Gumtree. They explain they can't take the flights and will offer to transfer the funds for a discounted price. They reveal the confirmation number so the victims really think everything it's legitimate. The purchasers are then required to transfer the money into an untraceable account, by wiring money through services like Western Union. When the victims try to redeem the tickets with their credit, they are told they can't because the initial tickets were bought with a stolen credit card. How to avoid: When you are buying any kind of tickets, make sure you purchase them through reputable sources. Don't buy them online, unless the sellers are local, so at least you are able to check the tickets physically and put a face to the transaction.
