did u use manual mode?
Most of the time, I use AV mode when shooting daylight and switch to manual mode for night photogrphy.
I recommand you to use M mode in the night, once you get the key, the M mode will be much easier for night photogrphy than AV/TV mode. To get more accurate exposure in M mode, you should be familiar with how aperure, shutter speed and ISO efffect your exposure and DOF.
Here are some tips for capture picrures in the night:
1. Shot your photos in RAW. By using RAW, you can easily adjust whith-balance and exposure than JPG.
2. Take a few test shots. You can quickly review your images on LED or check the histogram, then make adjustments until the picture meet your desires.
3. Keep your camera steady. You can use a tripod for long exposure and use the 2sec self-timer and mirror lock-up to avoid wobbling the camera.
