Expect much longer entry times when coming to the US
Last Thursday, May 2nd, the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) changed their policy and US border officers will now be required to verify that each person seeking entry to the US as an international student has a valid SEVIS record. Currently, SEVIS information is not available in “primary” inspection, (in other words, not available to the line officer who first checks your documents), but rather only in “secondary” inspection, a site off the line where persons with complicated entry issues are questioned. Since line officers cannot currently see the SEVIS record, this means that all entering students will be sent to secondary inspection until CBP can give line officers immediate access to the SEVIS record.
In short, students should plan for an extra couple of hours between air connections, or in order to cross a land border. Students reentering the U.S. with a new I-20 form after termination of a previous SEVIS record should expect a full inquiry into the reasons why they fell out of status in the US, and should come prepared with evidence showing why they had a SEVIS record termination.
Please plan your travel carefully, giving yourself enough time to enter the US.
It is unclear how long this new process requiring secondary inspection will be in effect. We will keep you updated as we get more information. |
