Once you enroll, then you can choose how much money you want to contribute. You can do a one time or on a weekly or monthly basis. Keep in mind that there is a limit you can contribute. The money you put in 529 saving account is your after tax, not pre-tax, meaning that you are putting whatever money you have on hand or in your bank. At the end of the year, you can claim for NY state tax credit, and I believe some for federal as well, but may not be much.
