Author Gary Soto initially believes that he should marrysomeone of his own culture and ethnicity based on his family’s urging to “marrya Mexican girl.”  His family’s influenceis so strong that he almost does not marry a woman he loves because she is Japanese.Although he has a strong inclination to marry within his own culture, Soto’sfriendship circle is very diverse and includes people of different races andcultures.
