Editor's note: This article was originally published on Oct. 5, 2018. It has been republished as spring rains bring the threat of flooding to Dallas-Fort Worth.
The city of Dallas has 84 projects in the works to improve flood protection, storm drainage and erosion control.
The projects, part ofProposition D of the city’s 2017 bond package, are scattered throughout Dallas as far north as near Frankford Road and as far south as Cedar Ridge Preserve.
Sarah Standifer, assistant director of stormwater operations for the city of Dallas, said that while the last bond package sought to address citywide improvements, Proposition D of this bond package focuses on more neighborhood-specific improvements.
This map shows specific projects plotted across the city along with a description of each. The map does not include larger-scale citywide projects the city plans to address.

The map shows some areas where flooding issues may be a greater concern than others. Those areas include:
  • [size=1.25]Three projects in Far East Dallas near El Cerrito Drive and Highland Road. One project looks to construct a relief system for off-site drainage, noting that Highland Road floods during heavy rains and that one residence has previously flooded.
  • [size=1.25]Four projects in Pleasant Grove near Crawford Memorial Park. One of these projects aims to construct a drainage system to prevent the flooding of about eight homes on Prairie Oak Drive, Buttercup Lane and Miami Drive.
  • [size=1.25]Seven projects in east Oak Cliff near South Denley Drive. These projects include adding culverts and in some cases raising roads.

“It’s an older city in the inner parts of Dallas,” Standifer said. While there is some focus closer to the those areas of the city, the map shows the projects are scattered.
Dallas city officials have unveiled a new websitethat allows users to track the progress of new bond projects.
Of the 84 projects under Proposition D, construction has started on only one. That project will make drainage improvements in the Wynnewood Village Shopping Center — northwest of the intersection of Zang Boulevard and Illinois Avenue.
The Wynnewood Village project began on July 23 and is expected to be completed April 24, 2019. The current budget for that project is $1,120,707.
The proposition goal is $48.75 million. The total bond package is $1.050 billion.
The process to identify projectsfunded through Proposition D included analyzing calls to 311, flood studies, community calls and emails, system inspection and drainage master plans.
Projects then went through a two-step evaluation involving technical criteria with a focus on public safety, and balancing criteria with a focus on supporting economic development and enhancing quality of life.
