Marriage
Couples may apply for a marriage license in-person or by mail through the Snohomish County Auditor's Office. Both parties must sign the application before a deputy auditor (or a notary public if the application is by mail). Witnesses or blood tests are not required to apply for a marriage license. A marriage license will be given to the parties upon receipt of the completed application and fee.
The license is not valid (cannot be used) until the third full day after the application is filed and expires 60 days from the date the application is filed. For example, if the application is made on Monday, the first day it can be used is Thursday. The three-day waiting period cannot be waived under any circumstance, including court order.
Application and license fee
$68 - payable in cash, money order, cashier's check, or Visa / MasterCard only. No personal checks are accepted; no refunds will be issued.
Submitting by mail
If applying by mail, please submit a completed and notarized application and payment at least 30 days prior to the ceremony to ensure sufficient time to process it and return your license by mail.
When completing the marriage application, use black ink only. Please ensure that your printing is clear and legible. This will prevent the possible rejection of your document by Snohomish County recording staff.
Payment for applications submitted by mail is by money order or cashier check only. No personal checks will be accepted. Make payment payable to the Snohomish County Auditor. Please include a contact name, address, and phone number where you may be reached if necessary.

Age requirements
Legal age for both parties is 18 years old. Witnesses or blood tests are not required to obtain a marriage license in the State of Washington.
17-year-olds
Applicants who are 17 years of age require custodial parent or legal guardian consent plus proof of age such as a driver's license or birth certificate. The custodial parent or legal guardian must accompany the applicant to sign the application form. Proof of legal guardianship will be required.
16-year-olds or younger
Applicants must have the consent of the Superior Court. In Snohomish County, please contact Juvenile Court Services at 425-388-7869 for more information. Emancipated minors must present court emancipation papers specifically allowing the minor to marry.
Address Confidentiality Program participants
If you are a participant in the state's Address Confidentiality Program, you may notify the staff person assisting you of your status when you arrive to complete the marriage license application process or you may call in advance to set up an appointment with our recording supervisor or lead. Staff will ensure that you and your significant other can complete your marriage license application in a private setting and that your marriage records will remain closed to public |
