“Inks used to brand meat and poultry parts or carcasses must be formulated using FDandC certified colors or color additives exempt from certification, and substances that are generally recognized as safe (GRAS) such as water, dextrose (corn sugar), isopropyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol, shellac, and/or acetone. The natural coloring agents alkanet, annatto, carotene, cochineal, green chlorophyll, saffron, and tumeric may be used for marking or branding ink on meat products only.
